Triplets & Duplets is something I developed during soundchecks when I was in the DC area reggae band Blacksheep from 1992 – 1995. I was mimicking the delay effect on the hi-hat with a simple back beat. Over the years I kept the hi-hat pattern going while shifting the snare and kick from a triple feel to a duple feel and back to triple looping everything at will.
The play-along track is a form to see it written in 6/8, 6/4 and 4/4. Repeating this form will help understand how it works going back and forth from triple to duple feel. After repeating the form over and over and committing it to memory, the interchange can happen anywhere as long as the snare lands in relationship to the hi-hats and kick.
