Gene Lake Interview

gene_lakeProducer, Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gene Lake gives us his perspective and experience on music and his development as a musician/drummer. The unique thing is Gene’s professional outlook as he relates it to the humanities instead of where most define by resume and ability. I consider Gene not only a close friend, but as an exciting inspiration to witness and be a part of. I first heard and met Gene in 1995 in Washington DC in a club called Twins on Colorado Avenue N.W. where he performed with pianist Andy Milne. I remember how refreshing it was to hear the way his sticks slapped those drums. He reminded me a lot of my playing and style. It is no coincidence we met and are now musical compatriots as well as friends.

Gene Lake & The Rick: Exchanging Ideas & Concepts

This is a look into the world of Gene Lake. Gene has worked with r&b group Surface, Me’shell NdegeOcello, Maxwell, and D’Angelo in the 1990’s. Gene has also worked with Steve Coleman, Henry Threadgill, Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Opus Akoben, Screaming Headless Torsos, David Sanborn, and presently Boz Scaggs.
2016-04-06 18.15.58I’ve known Gene for over 20 years and I’ve been a big fan of his since the beginning. I recently visited Gene in his home studio in the suburbs of Montclair, New Jersey outside of New York City. Considering Gene has recommended me for many of the artists mentioned, he is a wonderful player, songwriter and producer whom offers inspiration like no other which contributed to me professionally upon his much appreciated repeated referrals. This video is more of a drum hang. We played alongside each other on his wonderful Pearl Reference Pure kits exchanging ideas based off drum chants I launched into. Check out Gene’s loose, powerful, accurate and laid back style!

Craig Taborn picPianist/keyboardist Craig Taborn gives us a great interview explaining highlights of his experience with his favorite drummers. Craig is from Minneapolis and brings brilliant perspective to how drummers from his area are to perform with as well as how they react to the music and what they do to create the landscapes. Being that piano and electronic keyboard are percussive instruments, Craig analyzes each drummer’s approach to contributing and supporting the music. He has a vast history and experience of drummers he shares here with us in this informative interview.
